while it is still light, cross the Ponte Fabricio — standing on its
original stones since 62 BC — and arrive in Trastevere exactly as the
quarter turns over from afternoon to evening.
What follows is not a tasting crawl. Six or seven stops are sequenced so that
the fried things come while the fryers are going, the seated pasta course lands
when you are properly hungry, and the gelato is last. Tables are held at each
one, which on a Friday at nine is the whole difference between this and standing
in a queue.

Dusk, Tiber Island. Meet by the monument in the middle of
the square, not down at the riverbank.
First half hour. Across the bridge and into the lanes, with
the first tasting on Via dei Vascellari.
An hour in. Wine on Via dei Genovesi, then beer and street
food on Via Natale del Grande.
Two hours in. Past the basilica of Santa Maria in
Trastevere, which anchors the quarter’s main square.
The sit-down. A pasta course with wine chosen for it, on Via
Roma Libera.
Last stop. Artisan gelato, and you are left in the middle of
Trastevere at about ten.

Piazza di San Bartolomeo all’Isola is on Tiber Island itself, not on
either riverbank, and the guide waits by the monument with the cross on top in
the centre of the square. The operator asks specifically that you do not use
Apple Maps for it. From Largo di Torre Argentina it is about eight minutes on
foot; Trastevere has no metro of its own.
Know before you go
Two guests minimum. Book for at least two, or expect the
operator to contact you about moving the date.
Arrive hungry. A seated pasta course sits in the middle of
this; do not eat at seven.
Tips are not included. Gratuities, hotel transfers and any
extra drinks are outside the fare.
Dietary needs go in at booking. The operator will do its best
for vegetarians and gluten-free guests but says plainly it cannot take severe or
life-threatening allergies.
Stops vary. Offerings and stops change by day and season,

Is the pasta course a real meal or a tasting?
A real one. A sit-down pasta dinner with wine pairings is inside the fare, alongside the pizza tasting and the street food. You will not need dinner afterwards.
What if I cannot manage four hours on cobbles?
Take the golf-cart tasting instead: it covers Trastevere, the Gianicolo and Testaccio in the same four hours with you sitting down, and it includes a terrace course and four drinks. It is listed on the shorter street-food walk page as the alternative for the same reason.
Can children come?
